In 2006, ‘NSync’s Lance Bass came out publicly as gay. Once the “most beloved son” of his home state of Mississippi, he was instantly rejected and his hopes that Mississippi could ever embrace change were dashed. Four years later, the story of a Mississippi youth made national headlines. Constance McMillen was suing her school for denying her the right to go to prom with her girlfriend.

Something was shifting in one of the most socially conservative places in America. This gave Lance, and so many others, a glimmer of hope for change in the state they call home.

MISSISSIPPI: I AM, examines the relatively new battle on the part of primarily young LGBT people to bring gay civil rights and visibility out in the open and beyond division.

Kevin Zraly’s passion for wine and his uncanny ability to translate the world of wine into a fun and approachable subject have led him to become one of the world’s leading wine educators and best-selling wine authors. He began his career as a waiter and bartender at John Novi’s Depuy Canal House restaurant, and later journeyed to vineyards both here and abroad. After moving to New York City and a chance meeting Chef Barbara Kafka and legendary restaurateur Joe Baum in 1976, Kevin became cellar master and eventually wine director for the renowned Windows on the World restaurant atop the World Trade Center. By 2000, Windows was the country’s top-grossing restaurant, and with Kevin at the reins of its renowned wine program from the day it opened to its final tragic day, September 11, 2001, it had sold more wine than any restaurant in the country.

Are you one of a growing number of Americans that feels the government is not just on the wrong track but completely out of control and out to control most aspects of our lives? Do you feel threatened or angry at big government bailouts, healthcare reform, a sinking economy, and illegal immigration? Do you firmly believe that the government is actively working to replace the power of the people with a New World Order?

For this episode of True Life we are looking for young individuals who are not just angry at what they see as Government gone wrong, but are actively taking measures to challenge this direction.

Each year since 1998 the James Beard Foundation Awards Committee has recognized our nation’s beloved regional restaurants. Distinguished by their timeless appeal, they serve quality food that reflects the character of their communities. JBF anoints these locally-owned restaurants with a James Beard Foundation Award and designates them as America’s Classics.

Five new restaurants are chosen for this honor each year, and the Linton team travels anywhere from Alaska to Florida to profile these American gems.

Client: James Beard Foundation / Bowen and Company
Format: Short Form Event Video
Release: 2011 James Beard Awards
Duration: 3:41

In October 2010, the James Beard Foundation launched an annual national food conference. Each year we will bring together thought leaders from diverse areas of expertise to address the most important issues facing our industry and our food system. This year at the Pew Conference Center in Washington, D.C., we are addressing the issues of sustainability and public health in the foodservice industry with a diverse group of experts that includes JBF Award–winning chefs, farmers, corporate foodservice executives, philanthropists, urban planners, policy makers, agricultural experts, labor specialists, and others.

Many people and organizations have been working on these issues for years. But we see an important role for our Foundation and the people who support us to play. Prior to the conference we planned a national “listening tour” to hear what people in the industries of food and sustainability were working on. We wanted to know what concerned them the most, what projects excited them, what challenges they faced. We wanted to find people with interesting approaches to meaningful solutions. And we wanted to be able to engage and support our constituency of high profile chefs by providing them a seat at the table. The inspirational stories, the common themes, and the challenges we heard about at these regional meetings helped shape our D.C. agenda.

FareStart provides a community that transforms lives by empowering homeless and disadvantaged men, women, and families to achieve self-sufficiency through life skills, job training and employment in the food service industry. The company was founded by David Lee, a chef and entrepreneur, who in 1988 recognized the need to provide Seattle’s disadvantaged and homeless populations with healthy and nutritious food. David first launched a for-profit business called Common Meals, and in 1992, after years of working out of small church kitchens, found a kitchen large enough to meet his needs and the needs of the growing homeless population. There, he began to train the very people he was serving, providing homeless individuals with the opportunity to work and to contribute to their own community and FareStart was born.
